THE SITUATION by Jasyn Lucas
Thompson, Manitoba, CANADA
www.jasynlucas.ca
10" x 30" Original Painting
Artist's Description:
My art reflects the environment around us, its natural wonders and inhabitants, in such a rich part of the world.
Landscapes and Animals are dissapearing rapidly. It is our responsibility to promote and preserve the environments around us.
My paintings pay tribute to those real moments in our lives that make you feel so real that it becomes surreal. The serenity and peace around you at the time is all that counts, and for a brief moment you forget all the hussle...The hussle that comes with surviving in a cut throat cycle of society, in the concrete world of consumerism and fog,.............and for that one moment you remember exactly how delicate and precious our natural resources are. Protect our environment so we can protect our memories.

KOKUM FLOWERS 3 by Dawn Marie
Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA
28"x 35" MIXED MEDIA ON CANVAS
Acrylic, pastel, conte, Acid Free Paper
Artist's Description:Aaron has actually been a great friend to me. With his honesty and reality about some of his struggles with depression. I was under his guidance and friendship that I began to seriously look at my own issues and start finding ways to heal through my artwork. The Kokum Flowers Series is all about healing. My Grandmother taught me how to make quilts when I was very young. She taught me to pray while I made them. So everytime, I make one of these in this series, I am praying. I pray for gratitude. I pray for good relations. I pray for blessings. And by giving these blessings away...I find healing myself. It is an honour to give this painting away. Even though, he doesn't want me to.
My paintings are never about perfection because I don't believe in it. I believe that all things are imperfect but through grace and balance, they work out the way they are supposed to.

Handmade Knife with Ox Bone Carved Handle by Scott Knight
UNITED KINGDOM
Artist's Description:
The handle is carved in ox bone, on this side we have Ku, one of the four ancient Hawian Gods. Ku is the god of war, he represents the fight Candice has put up and he will to get through, and his name litteraly means "stand up". On the other side we have Lono, the fertility and Music God representing peace love and family.
The blade is an old straw flail from my combine harvester here on the farm. I recycle all kinds of old scrap metal to make my blades. I make the blades by hand and dont go for the factory finish, you can see where I've been on the face of my blades. I leave the texture on the knife to give it character and keep the home grown look. The blade is high carbon steel, not stainless but it does take on its own sweet colour in time. With use it will age and gain a nice natural patina as it darkens. It's sharp.
The cord is a four strand round braid with spliced loop and toggle fastner. The toggle is a full body Ku in his war dance pose. The back of the toggle has the shop name engraved in gold lettering and is signed on the front. The sheath is chrome saddle leather, hand sewn by myself and both sides have a window sewn on with a flash of antique lizard skin. I wouldnt use modern skinz on this but I am all about recycling.

GOD OF EARTHQUAKES CARVING by Gareth Barlow
New Zealand
CARVED BONE NECKLACE
Artist's Description:
In Māori mythology, Rūaumoko is the God of earthquakes, volcanoes and seasons. He is the youngest son of Ranginui (the Sky father) and Papatūānuku (the Earth mother).
After Rangi and Papa were separated by their sons, Rangi cried, and his tears flooded the land. To stop this, the sons decided to turn Papa face down, so Rangi and Papa could no longer see each other's sorrow. Rūaumoko was at his mother's breast when this happened, so he was carried into the world below. He was given fire for warmth by Tama-kaka, and his movements below the earth cause earthquakes and volcanoes.
After two eruptions of Mt Ruapehu in 96 and 97, and the deadly earthquakes that have rocked Christchurch for over a year, as well as the thousands that rock New Zealand every year, Rūaumoko has shared his power with all kiwis in some way.
But in the face of adversity, it is the kiwi spirit that keeps each person going. The Gods are respected, not feared. And through tribulations we grow stronger.

MAORI CARVING by Dallas Crombie
New Zealand
CARVED PENDANT NECKLACE
Artist's Description:
Contemporary version of a traditional Maori design known as a Pekapeka which is the Native bat. The bat was one of the few sources of protein for early Maori and it is believed that the Pekapeka was worn to ensure that the wearer would always have food. There is some school of thought that the carving may also have served a practical purpose by being used in the storage of fishing lines with the line being wound around the carving and the holes used to secure the hooks. Quite often the Pekapeka had at either side a Manaia head (mythological half bird half man talisman that is seen in many Maori carvings).
With this piece being of British Columbian stone I wanted to add elements of design from the people of the Pacific North West so altered the manaia heads to resemble abstract Raven heads.
