"LEAN ON US" by Dawna Robertson

Brazilian Soapstone Carving 14"L x 6"W x 7"H
Artist's Description:
"Lean on Us" is a spirit bear soapstone sculpture carved in Brazilian soapstone. I was deeply moved and inspired to carve these three bears representing Clarice, baby Liam and Aaron as a result of reading what happened and viewing the photo of Clarice looking down at Liam laying beside her in the hospital bed. When I read that Clarice didn't know when she would be able to hug him in her arms again, a vision for a sculpture immediately unfolded. As I was carving, the sculpture took on a story of its own positioning each bear to tell the story more than I had originally envisioned.
The "Aaron" bear is beneath "Clarice" holding her up with all of his strength all the while nudging baby Liam up with his nose so he can feel the warmth of his mom's hug once again. The bear claws on the side symbolize all the artists and volunteers who came forward to donate to Clarice's fundraiser. The largest bear claw on the side representing Greg Mottl for getting the wheel in motion and kickstarting the fundraiser. The eagle representing the Great Spirit all the while watching over each and everyone.
The sculpture is all one block of soapstone. Baby Liam was "etched" down to the white natural form of soapstone to symbolize the Spirit Bears who are rare and endangered on the west coast of British Columbia. The Spirit Bear Tsimshian Legend states that Raven the Creator went amongst all the black bear and made every 10th one born, white to be a symbol of the Pure Ice Age when everything was "good and right"". I felt it only fitting that baby Liam be one of the white spirit bears, gentle, pure and innocently just wanting a tight warm hug from his Mom once again and Aaron doing everything in his power to make it happen and have his family back at home safe and sound in his arms.

A flute I can play in the rain and in front of anyone and not feel like I'm giving up anything! How did you do this? You've just consigned a couple of nice and much more expensive wooden flutes to the "give away" drawer. THANK YOU!!"

STARTING BID: $50.00
Artist's Description:
I painted it after being in a ceremony. I guess in a way it honors that experience. Personally I love the feeling of wind and the movement of storms so I tried to capture that in the picture. I really just allowed spirit to guide me, I did not really have a clear image in my mind while I was painting this.
