As part of Clarice's ongoing therapy, we went to the mountains. Physically, it was for the walking, the fresh air. But there is something else about the mountains in Alberta.

The silence of the valleys, the heat of the sun in clean skies, the cool wind coming off Lake Minnewanka, where our ancestors speak to our hearts.

It's simpler there.

Away from the city, the concerns of the grid, you can feel yourself connecting to the land, or rather, the blocks we put up begin to fall and the land can connect to us again without our resistance.

Clarice can walk for a longer time every day. She still has trouble with flexibility and the fingers on the left hand will require extensive time and work, but she is happy.

Happiness isn't something you work toward. It's not something you get. It's not even something that happens.

Happiness is an extension of contentment.

And that comes from being where you are without worry, fear, expectation or judgement.

Like the old Raven who came to sit beside us one morning, croaking out a quiet conversation with the baby, just be.

Be where you are.

And breathe.
